Orange VFX Sponsors Covenant Student Week

Student unions usually organize student week events in most schools to allow students to participate in extracurricular activities to help build other aspects of student life. Some benefits it provides students include networking and exposure to diverse perspectives from panel discussions, seminars, workshops, and training. These were the key considerations of the planners and organizers of Tech Week at Covenant University.

Last week, we had the incredible opportunity to immerse ourselves in the exciting Tech Week event for the students of Covenant University. This was the first of its kind in the school, and we are glad that we partook in it by sponsoring the event and speaking to the students about Animation and the CreaTech industry.

The event was held from the 30th to the 3rd of June 2023, but we had the company well represented by some of our best team members. Accessing the venue was daunting; it sounded like an unpopular place in the school that few people knew about.

The officials warmly welcomed the team when they eventually arrived at the venue. While waiting for the presentation, they had a good time getting acquainted with the officials that briefed them on the general idea behind the event.

Some of the other sponsors for the event were Zenith Bank Plc. and Oraimo. The turnout was massive and impressive, but seeing so many young people show so much willingness for knowledge acquisition outside the traditional school curriculum was also encouraging.

Our speaker, Mr. Chimezie Okeke, spoke about Animation as a Createch tool. If you want to know more about the Createch industry, please check out our previous post here. Read Here. Some of the critical points of the presentation were:

  • He explained the meaning of Animation and the different applications of Animation. Some of the areas of Animation can include Film, games, advertising, education, and more.
  • He also discussed emerging fields such as VR/AR/XR, Artificial Intelligence, and SVOD subscription video-on-demand services. He further stated that “with more representation and globalization of digital content, the future of the animation industry is bright”.
  • Another point of interest he mentioned was the Animation pipeline. The three layers are Pre-Production, production, and post-production.

The presentation increased the students’ interest, especially when they saw some of our projects and the companies we worked with. Most of them saw this as an excellent opportunity to follow a career in Animation.

To support the zeal and interest shown in the Animation, we offered a 20% discount on all courses so that any of the students present at the event can apply and take the courses at discounted prices. We collected interested students’ names and other details so that we will follow up with them.

Considering how beneficial events like this are and that it aligns with our vision to train 10,000 youths yearly in digital arts, we will be happy to sponsor more events like this. If you would like to know what it entails, send a mail to info@orangevfx.com

Olamiade Olajide

Interview: Success Story with Olamide Olajide

Today, we have the privilege of speaking with Olamide Olajide, a highly accomplished 3D generalist and animator with an inspiring success story. Olamide has achieved a significant accomplishment and has become a role model for others who want to join the 3D industry. In this interview, Olamide will share insights into his journey and provide valuable advice for those looking to achieve their own goals. We are excited to learn from his experiences.

Hello Olamide, please can you tell us about yourself, and a bit about your educational background?

My name is Olamide Olajide Emmanuel. I graduated from Covenant University with a Computer Science degree and am from Kwara state in Nigeria. As a professional, I specialize in 3D Generalist and Graphic Design.

You worked as a 3D animator, how did you begin your journey into this career path?

My journey into the 3D industry began during my second semester at 100 level as a computer science student at Covenant University in 2016. It all started when I watched a short animation created by Gbenga Ajetomob, who was working for Orange Vfx Studio at that time. I was immediately drawn to the world of 3D and started watching a lot of tutorial videos. I even downloaded Cinema4D, which was the software I started with.

Fast forward to November 2021, I had the opportunity to train in character acting at Orange Seed for two months, under the guidance of Mr. Obinwa Hillary. After completing my training at Orange Seed, I was offered a staff position at the studio where I continue to learn and grow under the mentorship of experienced professionals.

How did you discover Orange VFX Studios?

I can’t recall the exact date when I discovered Orange VFX, but I do remember watching the Ovie and Wale animation ‘E don show, e never show o’ while I was in secondary school. Around 2017, I became aware of Orange VFX as an animation studio in Nigeria and realized that they made most of the 3D animations I had been watching.

After your training at Orange, who were your mentors, and how did the mentorship impact your growth?

After my training at Orange Seed, I was mentored by Mr. Michael Oboh, and Mr. Richard Oboh, as well as other staff members such as Mr. Chimezie Okeke, Mr. Obinwa Hillary, Mr. Charles Agbo, Mr. John Adeyeye, Mr. Tsombul Samuel, and Mr. Gbolahan Ismail. Their guidance was instrumental in helping me deepen my knowledge and skills in the field of 3D animation, 3D modeling, 3D texturing, and other areas.

How long did you work for the company? And how did working at Orange impact your career?

I was employed at Orange for one year and two months, including a six-month internship. Working at Orange has immensely impacted my career, one that words cannot fully explain. During my time at the company, I had the privilege of learning, working, and networking with talented individuals. These experiences have significantly helped me grow and advance my career.

What can you say was your greatest career strength, and how did you manage your career weaknesses?

My greatest strength is my creativity; my weakness was working with too many people. However, I have learned how to manage it by ensuring that everyone follows the same workflow when working on large projects, which has made working with others easier and more fun.

Let’s talk about the company’s culture and the challenges you faced at Orange VFX. Were there policies in the company that affected your work? How did you manage the tough situations?

I have no comments regarding the company culture and policies as I have not encountered any challenges with them.

What are your next career steps?

For my next career path, I intend to establish a 3D company, and my initial focus will be on developing a mobile 3D game that I have already started working on. In addition, I plan to further education to enhance my skills and knowledge.

What advice will you give those who want to enter this industry? How can they improve themselves in this career path?

I advise those who want to enter the industry to never be after to take risks and never stop learning.

BRAND MARKETING

What is brand marketing?

There is no brand success without brand marketing. You may disagree but the success of global brands like Amazon, Tesla, Apple, Microsoft, Google, and others proves the fact that brand marketing is an important element of any brand’s success.

How important is brand marketing? This is an important question every business needs to answer. If you want to answer this question and learn how to incorporate brand marketing into your business strategy, you should continue reading this article.

What is a brand? “A brand is the set of expectations, memories, stories, and relationships that, taken together, account for a consumer’s decision to choose one product or service over another.”- Seth Godin.

Branding is no longer what it used to be. It has gone beyond just placing stickers on your products to differentiate you from your competitors, building expectations, telling stories that matter, and fostering relationships with customers. A brand is the reputation of the business. Having a unique brand image can have a huge impact on your business and give you a strong competitive advantage in your business.

Meaning of brand marketing:

According to Investopedia, the term brand marketing refers to a business and marketing concept that helps people identify a particular company, product, or individual. Brands are intangible, so you can’t touch or see them. Brand marketing helps shape people’s perceptions of companies, and their products. Brands commonly use identifying markers to help create brand identities within the marketplace.

They provide enormous value to the company, giving them a competitive edge over others in the same industry. The first and most important step in creating a strong brand perception is by creating a unique brand identity.

Brand Identity: Branding generally as we have stated earlier is intangible. But brand identity is what we can see. Brand Identity comprises several brand elements:

  1. Logo
  2. Key Colors/ color
  3. Corporate Typefaces and fonts
  4. Standard Typographic Treatments
  5. A consistent style for images
  6. Library of graphic elements.

These elements have to be consistent in all your marketing messages. Inconsistency can ruin a brand image. You make it easier for your customers to identify business when the images, the colors, and even the style of your marketing messages spread across different platforms and media correspond with one another.

Importance of Brand Marketing

Everything we know about every product we use is because of branding. The link connects the company to the customer and vice versa. It creates the relationship required to make them loyal customers. Some of the benefits you enjoy from marketing your brand include:

  1. Easily project your brand message:

Brand marketing is the best way to project a clear message about your business to your customers.

  1. Branding is an asset:

Assets are profitability tools for business. With effective brand marketing, you can increase the revenue and profitability of your business. Effective brand marketing also leads to the proper positioning of a business, this can increase your market share, and increase your revenue, and profits.

  1. Helps to attract investment funds:

Businesses seeking funds from investors must position themselves through brand marketing, which helps businesses in increasing their value by giving them more leverage in the industry. Business can increase their size easily using this fund.

  1. Overcome fierce competition:

An effective way to overcome fierce industry competition is through brand marketing. Branding makes your businesses unique and endears businesses to their customers.

  1. Brand marketing has helped brands remain in business even in difficult economic times. Through customer support and loyalty, a good brand is sustained. Brand marketing as a strategy also helps get customer feedback that businesses use to improve their businesses and services.
  2. Command higher prices:

Businesses can also command a higher price if the brand can promote its unique selling point. This will give it an edge over competitors and yield higher profits for the business.

BRANDING MISTAKES YOU CAN AVOID:

  1. Not having a well-defined strategy:
  2. Failure to understand your target audience
  3. Inconsistency
  4. Not providing a great brand experience
  5. Not living up to your brand promise
  6. Ignoring trends and staying outdated
  7. Failure to research competition

Review of Some 3D Software used for Production

Animation is a beautiful work of art achieved through ideas, imagination, and the effective use of required software. Animation software has become increasingly popular over the past few years. With technological advancements, animators can now create stunning visuals with ease and speed.

Before the advent of technology, animation was done through xerography (a process of dry photocopying that allowed animators to forgo the need to ink animations by hand), Cel animation (the process involved characters being hand-drawn on transparent celluloid sheets and placing overpainted background), Multiplane Process (typically involved moving several pieces of artwork at various speed and at different distances from one another). These processes made animation tedious, and it could have produced better work, but it didn’t.

There is a wide variety of animation software available today, from free programs to high-end professional suites, some for 2D animation and others for 3D animation.

Some of the most recommended 2D Animation Software include:

  1. Toon Boom
  2. Adobe After Effects
  3. Illustrator (specifically for designs)
  4. Moho Pro
  5. Animaker
  6. Cartoon Animator
  7. Blender

Today, 3D animation programs are in high demand and are extremely useful to both animators and designers. Some animation software is available for free, while others are paid programs. The world around us is changing at a breakneck pace, and industries are expanding faster than anyone could have predicted.

3D Animation software creates 3D movies, video effects, motion graphics, visual effects, and animation videos. Some of the most widely used and popular animation programs are:

  • Autodesk Maya
  • Autodesk 3Ds Max,
  • Blender
  • Cinema 4D
  • ZBrush,
  • LightWave 3D.

The animation sequence is created digitally using an operating system and software, making animation movies easier and simpler.

Of all these options, there are six that stand out as being particularly useful to us for creating animations: Adobe After Effects, Autodesk Maya, Blender, Cinema 4D, Adobe Character Animator, and Adobe Animate.

Adobe After Effects

Adobe After Effects is a powerful motion graphics and animation software professionals use worldwide. From creating stunning visuals for films, television shows, commercials, video games, and more – After Effects has become an essential tool in any creative’s arsenal. Its intuitive user interface and comprehensive features can be used to create almost anything imaginable.

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced professional looking to expand your skillset – Adobe After Effects has something for everyone! It allows users to easily manipulate layers with keyframes that control various parameters such as position, and scale size rotation, which gives them complete control over how their animations look on screen. Additionally, hundreds of effects are available from built-in plugins like Lightning Strike or Particle Playground, allowing users to quickly add special effects to their compositions with just a few clicks of the mouse!

After Effects also offers 3D capabilities allowing artists to take advantage of advanced camera tracking tools and environment mapping techniques, giving them even more options when creating complex scenes or environments within their projects. This makes it ideal for film production, where intricate visual elements need precise placement within 3D space and elaborate lighting setups – without having access to expensive hardware rigs usually associated with this type of work!

Furthermore, Adobe’s Dynamic Link feature allows users working in other programs like Photoshop & Premiere Pro seamlessly integrate assets between each application so they can continue editing without ever leaving one program while still maintaining complete creative freedom throughout the entire workflow process – making collaboration between multiple artists more effortless than ever before!

All these features combined make Adobe After Effect one of the most versatile pieces of software today; no matter what project you’re working on, chances are good that AE will have something to offer to help bring your vision to life faster & better than ever before!

Pros of using Adobe After Effects

  1. It is best suited for motion graphics, 2D animation, text animation, video editing
  2. It is also an excellent tool for stop-motion animation.

When integrated with illustrator, it makes great animations; when combined with premiere pro, it makes excellent videos. It can do much in both worlds, which is impressive.

 Cons of Adobe After Effects

  1. Rendering a final project is a time-consuming process that can occasionally fail.
  2. If you’re a beginner, this software can be highly intimidating due to the sheer volume of information and features.

Autodesk Maya

Autodesk Maya is a powerful 3D modeling, animation, and rendering software used by professionals in the entertainment industry. It has been around since 1998 and is one of the most popular programs for creating high-quality 3D visuals. Whether you’re an animator, modeler, or visual effects artist – Autodesk Maya can help you create stunning digital art that will wow your audience.

In terms of its features, Autodesk Maya offers many tools to help bring your ideas to life, such as character rigging and animation tools; advanced particle simulations; NURBS curves & surfaces; UV mapping tools; terrain sculpting capabilities; nonlinear editing options; custom shader creation with Arnold renderer support; a node-based compositing system called Hypershade, among others. It also supports real-time playback with NVIDIA GPUs using OptiX AI denoising technology which helps reduce render times significantly. The program also comes packed with several scripts that allow users to quickly set up complex scenes without manually adjusting settings each time.

From a user experience perspective, Autodesk Maya provides an intuitive interface where all its various features are easily accessible from within one main window, making it easy for both beginners and experienced users alike to navigate through their projects faster than ever. Furthermore, plenty of online tutorials can be beneficial when starting this journey into the 3Dmodelingg world!

If you’re looking for a comprehensive suite of professional-level software, look no further than Autodesk Maya – the perfect choice whether working on individual projects or collaborating within teams!

Pros of Autodesk Maya

  1. Generally, Autodesk Maya is suitable for anyone who wants advanced and high-quality 3D models and animation. It makes work faster because it possesses incredible features and presets to complete the job more quickly.
  2. Easy to build workflow due to robust customizability.
  3. It has a simple (enough) python API. It’s easy to create scripts and plugins. And there are many free or paid plugins on the internet to speed up 3d work.

Cons of Autodesk Maya

  1. Maya has a steep learning curve
  2. It is costly to use and also requires powerful hardware to run.

BLENDER

Blender is an open-source 3D computer graphics software program. It can create various 3D models, animations, and visual effects. Blender has become increasingly popular due to its versatile features and user-friendly interface. With Blender, users can easily create high-quality visuals for film production, game development, architecture visualization, or any other creative field that requires complex 3D modeling tasks.

One of the main advantages that make Blender stand out from other similar programs is its ability to quickly produce realistic results with minimal effort from the user’s side. The program offers many tools, such as particle systems which allow users to realistically simulate natural phenomena like smoke or fire without having extensive knowledge of physics or mathematics. It also provides a wide range of materials and textures that enable creators to make their projects look lifelike with just a few clicks.

Finally, another great feature of Blender is its affordability since it’s free for anyone who wants access. This means people don’t have to spend thousands on expensive software licenses only get started creating stunning visuals right away at no cost! Plus, there are plenty of resources online that provide tutorials on how to use a blender, so even if you’re entirely new to this type of digital art, you’ll still be able to pick up the basics quickly enough to start making your own masterpieces.

Pros of Using Blender Software:

  1. It is free and open source.
  2. It is more versatile than most 3D programs.
  3. It is a community-driven project; hence it is always easy to find help with tutorials that can guide you if you get stuck using it.

Cons of Using Blender

  1. Extremely hardware intensive, requiring a lot of GPU and CPU power.
  2. Even if it creates realistic renders, rendering takes a lot of time. It even crashes while rendering if your system has a low processor.

Cinema 4D

Cinema 4D is a powerful 3D animation and rendering software used by professionals in the film, television, and gaming industries. It has become one of the most popular tools for creating high-quality visuals with its intuitive user interface, robust feature set, and wide range of plugins to customize to fit any project’s needs. With Cinema 4D, you can create stunning animations that look like professional animators made them without spending months learning complex software or hundreds of dollars on expensive hardware. The program also offers tools that allow users to build scenes from scratch or modify existing ones quickly.

One reason Cinema 4D stands out amongst other 3d programs is its ability to quickly produce photorealistic images using advanced lighting techniques such as global illumination (GI). GI simulates how light interacts with objects in a scene which results in more realistic shadows and reflections than traditional raytracing methods offer. Additionally, it includes physical render engines like Octane Render, which uses GPUs instead of CPUs for faster processing when rendering large projects. This makes it ideal for those who need quick turnaround times while simultaneously achieving excellent visual quality results.

Finally, what sets Cinema 4d apart from many other programs is its compatibility across multiple platforms, including Windows, Mac OSX, Linux & iOS. This means you don’t have to worry about not being able to use certain features due to incompatibilities between different operating systems – no matter where you are working on your project, there’s sure to be a compatible version available! In addition, flexibility allows artists to collaborate regardless of their preferred platform, making collaboration more effortless than ever before! All these factors make C4d an essential tool for anyone looking to create impressive visuals efficiently & effectively, whether they are novice hobbyists just getting started or experienced professionals seeking to add a new level of sophistication to their workflows!

Pros of Cinema 4D

Cinema 4D provides a wide range of texturing tools, including shaders, non-based materials, and 3D printing, along with several lighting features.

  1. Cinema 4D can accurately handle cloth, rope, soft body, and collision simulation.
  2. The latest version of Cinema 4D can seamlessly handle Zbrush.

Cons of Cinema 4D.

  1. It is expensive software to make use of
  2. There could be issues with body painting and UV editing

Zbrush

ZBrush is one of the most influential and popular 3D sculpting software programs available today. It has been used by professional artists, game developers, and hobbyists alike to create stunning digital sculptures easily. But what are the pros and cons of using ZBrush? Let’s take a closer look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of this incredible program.

One major pro for ZBrush is the intuitive user interface that makes it easy to learn how to use all its features quickly. The program also offers an impressive array of tools for creating detailed models from scratch or modifying existing ones in any way you can imagine – something that many other 3D sculpting programs simply cannot do as well as ZBrush does! Additionally, plenty of online tutorials can help new users get up-to-speed on how everything works within minutes.

On the flip side, however, one potential downside when working with Zbrush is its steep learning curve; while not impossible to master by any means, it will take time before users become entirely comfortable navigating through all aspects of this complex software package efficiently without making mistakes along the way (which could be costly!). Additionally, because so much power comes packed into such a small package – even experienced users may find themselves overwhelmed at times due to the sheer volume of options available in terms of customization!

Overall, if you’re looking for an incredibly versatile yet still relatively simple toolset, look no further than Zbrush – once mastered, you’ll have access to some genuinely excellent toolsets that can make your creations come alive like never before!

Pros of Using Zbrush

  1. This software is the priority tool for heavy sculpting
  2. The system of customizable brushes allows robust control that makes room for creativity.
  3. Zbrush has a large user community that makes it possible to get access to lots of resources.

Cons of Using Zbrush

  1. Difficulty in attaining specific commands or shortcuts
  2. It could be better suited for renders. Crashes a few times a year
  3. It is costly to purchase.

All the software mentioned here is fantastic; however, one will choose which software to work with based on what suits their needs. As a freelancer with a low budget, you might consider working with Blender, which is free. Still, if you work in an established studio,  you will consider more sophisticated software like Autodesk Maya or Cinema 4D.

Before we delve into those, two critical questions in your mind we need to answer are: who is this Masterclass for, and how much will it cost?

The Masterclass has been designed for people who have beginner or intermediate-level knowledge acquired in our school or through other means of learning. It offers students the best opportunity to learn from experts in this industry. Which of the skills will you like to gain advanced knowledge on? Is it Photography? Motion Graphics?  3D Character Modelling, Character Acting, or 3D Animation? These courses will be available to you in this Masterclass.

The benefits of signing up for a Masterclass are numerous. Students will gain expert-level training and valuable insights into how professionals approach their work. Students will be taken through the nitty-gritty of our workflow and the production pipeline, taught secrets and walked through technical issues they will likely face as they navigate their work.

Additionally, students will have the opportunity to interact through live sessions with experts from other parts of the world. There will be periodic projects providing extra practice opportunities to help them understand what they are taught and gain quick mastery of what is being taught.

Another beautiful thing about this is that it has been designed for those who can attend physically or online. You do not have to worry about your distance or work schedule. If you do not reside in Lagos or are a busy 9-5 worker, you can still register and take the classes because they will be held every weekend.

With all the value promised, how much will this cost? The cost of the Masterclass will be announced later. Still, we can assure prospects that this will be a worthy investment with an ROI more fantastic than they ever imagined.

Success Story: Interview with Oriaku Chuks

SUCCESS STORY: CHUKS ORIAKU

Hello Chukwukere, please tell us about yourself and your educational background.

My name is Chukwukere Michael Oriaku, I am an indigene of Abia State, Umuahia Precisely. I studied Economics at Abia State University and graduated in 2017.

You worked as a graphics designer and 3D animator at Orange VFX studios. How did you begin your journey into this career path?

I got my first computer in 2009 when I learned graphics design during my university period. After my NYSC, I was thinking of going into the Banking industry. But it wasn’t my interest, so I decided to go into 3D, although I never knew about any 3D company in Nigeria. I researched through Google, and that was how I found Orange VFX, but they did not have a branch in Abuja, where I was staying at the time, so I had to come down to Lagos for the training, and now we are here. My training at Orange VFX began with the 3D jumpstart, Character Acting, and character animation After my training, I became opportune to work with Orange VFX.

How did you discover Orange VFX studios?

As I mentioned earlier, I discovered Orange VFX when searching for Animation companies where I could learn 3D Animation after my NYSC. I had never been to any 3D Animation studio before. During my research, I discovered that they were the studio that produced the Ovie and Wale Skit, which I really loved, so I was eager to learn 3D Animation in that same studio. This made me choose Orange VFX compared to other studios I found.

After your training at Orange, who were your mentors, and how did the Mentorship impact your growth?

After the training, I was opportune to go through Mentorship, which I did for about 4 months; I was even more privileged to be mentored by Mr Richard, the MD of Orange VFX. The Mentorship showed me that 3D Animation was more than I thought it was and that Orange VFX would support me. He was supportive. I decided to take it further and applied for the internship, which was granted. I gathered a lot of knowledge during my training, which made Orange allow me to intern with them.

How long did you work for the company?

I have been in Orange VFX studios for the past two years. I started in 2021.

What was your most outstanding career strength, and how did you manage your weaknesses?

My greatest career strength is that I know how to endure. I am a very passionate person when it comes to this 3D Animation. The fact that I plan to be on the bigger stage has kept me. Also, another thing that has kept me is my will and the zeal to learn more.

Every day, try to learn new things and ensure you are updated with the current trends, skills, and workflow. You might be doing something different for more extended hours when there are easier ways to do the same thing and achieve the same result with the same quality. It is a joy to remain passionate and keep the fire burning. You must do this with a high spirit; 3d Animation is very intense, takes time, and requires patience.

I am a very patient person, and I think anyone who wants to be in the 3D space has to learn how to be patient because sometimes you might be frustrated with feedback from clients, or your directors, things that could be avoided from the start, you find yourself in between, canceling Animation, re-doing them and all that. And also, working long hours requires patience and endurance; you have to learn to work long hours, which might include weekends if necessary, due to the nature of the job. Patience is the Key word there.

My weakness is that I can quickly lose interest when working if I am exhausted. So once I am tired, there is no passion or zeal to work again till I am strong enough to continue. Sometimes it hinders me because I might be working on something urgent, and I get tired in between and lose interest in continuing even when needed. Another thing is distractions , I always get tired when I am distracted or lose interest in what I am doing. In this industry, distraction comes continuously, and It is very vital to know how to manage your distraction. You will answer questions or put your colleague through something, distracting you from what you are doing. That is a key area I am working on, managing distraction.

Let’s talk about the company’s culture and the challenges you faced while working at Orange VFX. Were there policies in the company that affected your work? How did you manage the challenging situations?

The major challenge I faced when I was working was the location. My home address was far from work. Going through traffic daily to the office and back home was challenging. You have to wake up early and prepare. Sometimes you get to the office too early, and other times you are late. Most times, when you get to the office, you are too tired because of the stress of coming and going home. You get home late, which was really hard to deal with. Another challenge was the tight schedule that they usually have and the deadlines. There are jobs we do that should take a month, but due to back and forth and maybe some issues on the client’s part, when they delay and still insist that we deliver at the due date. That impacted me because we had to work back-to-back and long hours to deliver.

What are your next career steps?

My next career step is to continue learning to move from Animation up to the level of VFX for Animation, FX in particular, so I can aim to become a director for feature films and games and hopefully work in some of the biggest studios like Pixar and Disney.

What advice will you give those who want to enter this industry? How can they improve themselves in this career path?

The first thing I want to tell those aspiring to come to this industry is to have their mind made up. It won’t be easy, and it won’t be difficult; just try to be focused and determined to be in this industry, and don’t ever think of giving up. To be honest, you will face many challenges, but if you have your mind on the ball, all challenges will be easy to bypass and face if necessary.

Success Story: Charles Agbo.

Welcome to our interview series where we showcase stories aimed at inspiring young minds. In this post, we have the pleasure of speaking with Charles Agbo,  former intern at OrangeVFX Studios, where he shares his journey to success, valuable tips, and advice for those looking to break into the 3D field. Get ready to be inspired and motivated as we delve into 3D Character Acting.

Please introduce yourself to us. What university you graduated from, and what did you study?

Good Afternoon, everyone, I’m Charles Chukwuemeka Agbo from Enugu state. A graduate of Electrical Electronics Engineering from the Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture, Umudike

How did you discover Orange VFX studios? Why did you choose to learn 3D character acting

I was looking for an edge to go into IT. I wanted the kind of work life where I would wake up and turn on my laptop and start working, not something that required going miles to the office. I just wanted something that enabled me to work at the convenience of my home. Being artistic, I Figured I’d do well in design so I spoke with my younger brother who at the time was already in the tech space as a c# programmer, and he suggested I learn BLENDER. I had to start going to a co-working space in Festac where he used and that’s where I met Chidimma who introduced me to Orange VFX. We went together to Mr. Richard’s office for the first time.

Mr. Richard explained OrangeVfx’s 3D animation courses to me. I thought about it and didn’t see any harm in trying so I started with Jumpstart, then Character Modeling, and finally Character Acting.

Do you have intentions to learn anything else related to 3D?

In this life, learning is a continuous process, and I have plans for furthering. After training, I interned with Orange for a while, and the experience was good. I realized there is a whole lot in the world of 3D. I discovered Motion Graphics, VFX, cloth simulation, fluid simulation, PBR texturing and so much more. All these come together to tell the perfect story and the fact that I could tell my story in 3D was really fascinating.

Before your training, did you set any personal goals? Also, what were your training expectations?

Remember I mentioned that my drive was to learn a skill that would enable me to work and earn in the comfort of my home? As for personal goals, I didn’t have any. I had no prior knowledge of 3D. When you go into a world you don’t know about, you don’t really know what to expect. I kept an open mind, ready to learn and use what I learned.

How did the training impact your career?

Before I came to Orange VFX, I had a little idea of 3D from the blender lessons I took on YouTube; coming to Orange VFX exposed me to a lot. I wanted to make designs that would wow people, so being in Orange helped me achieve that; now, I can make digital Art that intrigues people. Orange impacted my career because I wasn’t just introduced to digital arts but also taught how to handle it.

What challenges did you face while learning, and how did you overcome them?

Charles: Learning is fun, but sometimes it can be too much. One of my significant challenges was getting to a point where I asked myself, “am I on the right track?” You know, when you just keep learning and haven’t made a penny from it, it makes you second-guess yourself. Another issue I had was when I felt like I was learning too much, especially if you aren’t applying all the knowledge yet. You might begin to feel like you forget some things you’ve learned. When I feel like that, I take a step back to cool off.

Orange VFX provides mentorship for trainees, and you also interned with the studio. What impact did this have on your growth?

Charles: During my internship, I realized I could learn much in 3D. I started engaging in these areas, and it didn’t take long before I became bewildered. Mr Richard helped me overcome that confusion, every time I spoke to him, he reminded me of the importance of focus. Getting results from one thing before moving to another is essential. You won’t forget the one you have learned. The idea is to grow by improving yourself.
Also, I am a perfectionist; I like to get 100 percent perfection and accuracy on a project before moving to another. Mr Richard taught me that was wrong; He said and I quote “when you are learning, you need to give yourself time and space to absorb. As you continuously work on different projects with the same skill you begin to gain mastery of it”. That was very helpful.

Apart from the mentorship provided by Mr. Richard, were there other people who impacted your learning and work?

Orange Team helped me grow. I realized that everyone was a major in their skill. Being in that circle felt like being in a family; it helped because when I’m learning and got stuck,
I could easily walk up to someone who is really good at it and seek help. It made learning faster because I could spend days trying to figure it out myself, but with the help of others on the team, the knowledge was fast, and the impact was huge.

You are currently freelancing and earning in dollars. How has that been for you? Can you share an estimate of how much you make monthly from Upwork?

It has been a great experience I must say. Waking and working from the comfort of my home, choosing my most preferred time to work which is usually night by the way, and earning in a foreign currency that’s way stronger than my country’s currency, not forgetting having Clients from anywhere in the world. It has been great so far.

An estimate of what I earn monthly? Some months I don’t earn, and some months I earn what can last for three months. My freelancing journey kicked off properly in July 2022, and from then till now, I have earned about $10,000. Now I am holding out a bit on jobs, so I can make time to learn more.

What are your future plans, and how do you plan to navigate your way to that destination?

Before I started my classes, Mr. Richard asked me, “why do you want to become an animator?” At that point, I didn’t really know what I wanted and always never answered the question. At the time I was really broke and all I could think of was how to Chanel my skill to make money from it. Mr Richard always went further to say “the essence is to be able to tell your story to the world someday which didn’t make sense to me at the time. One of the things I discovered in OrangeVfx is how big of a deal and lucrative digital content is and I intend to explore it even more. My plan is to tell my story as well as other stories and make a profit in the long run.

How do I plan on getting there?
Creating animation content is more about a team effort than it is about individual skill, so when I say I want to tell stories, I do not plan to do it all alone. I would like to build a team to take on bigger projects, just like we did in Orange. Sometimes last year, there were projects I didn’t bid for on Upwork because they were big and required a standard team, so I would like to build a team capable of taking on bigger projects.

There are thousands of young people like you who want to veer into this career path; what advice will you like to share with them?

My advice is this, “you don’t really need to know what you want, it is a free world; just keep an open mind. Whatever you are doing, do it diligently and with all your heart. It will pay off, maybe not instantly, but it will pay off eventually. You might not know the destination when you start a journey, but just keep going. Learning is not easy, but the benefits are always sweet when you start reaping them.
