Master the Craft and Speed of Video Editing

Clients no longer just want a “cut” — they want a professional who can move at commercial speed while holding broadcast-grade technical discipline: proxy-driven performance, colour-managed pipelines, precision multi-cam sync, and automated studio handoffs. This intensive 6-week curriculum is built to close that exact gap.

By pairing advanced NLE technique — proxy pipeline architecture, non-destructive colour, AI-assisted text-based editing, dynamic graphics linking — with real studio production discipline, you’ll build the technical muscle to take on high-velocity commercial briefs with speed, consistency, and confidence.

The 6-Day Advanced Curriculum

Day 1: High-Velocity Timeline Architecture, Proxy Pipelines & Media Management

Core Theme: Establishing broadcast-grade media ingestion, non-destructive timeline organisation, and high-performance offline editing pipelines before any narrative work begins.

  • Market Trend: Commercial post-production houses need editors who can organise terabytes of multi-camera RAW media instantly, without lagging timelines or media-offline errors.
  • Advanced Technical Concepts & Tools: Custom project templates & scratch disk routing; ingest presets; proxy generation (ProRes Proxy / DNxHR LB); Pancake Editing Timelines for parallel A/B/C-roll organisation; media cache management; metadata logging; sequence settings vs. source footage matching.
  • In-Class Practical Exercise: Ingest a mixed 4K/6K multi-camera card dump (RED, Sony S-Log3, ARRI raw). Build ingest/proxy presets, set up a project directory tree, construct a multi-level pancake timeline, and assemble a 30-second rough narrative assembly in under 20 minutes without dropped frames.
  • Weekly Between-Session Assignment: Organise a raw, unstructured multi-camera shoot folder into a studio-compliant project structure. Generate proxies, tag metadata, build stringouts by scene/take, and prepare a dual-pancake workspace for Week 2.
  • Capstone Milestone: Ingest, proxy, and structure the full capstone campaign’s raw asset repository.

Day 2: Text-Based AI Editing, Script Sync & Advanced Multi-Camera Production

Core Theme: Accelerating long-form narrative cuts and multi-angle interview edits using automated transcription, AI-driven speech assembly, and multi-cam engine optimisation.

  • Market Trend: Agencies increasingly use AI transcript editing and automated multi-cam sync to cut interview assembly time dramatically, on social-first turnaround timelines.
  • Advanced Technical Concepts & Tools: Text-Based Editing (transcript editing, filler-word deletion, automatic speaker tagging); Script-to-Timeline syncing; Multi-Camera Source Sequences (audio waveform, timecode, and marker-based sync); live angle switching via keyboard shortcuts; nested/flattened multi-cam sequences; Track Select for bulk reorganisation.
  • In-Class Practical Exercise: Sync a 4-camera dialogue/interview scene with multi-track lavalier/boom audio. Perform a live, real-time multi-cam edit using keyboard-only angle switching, then use text-based editing to trim pauses and filler speech to execute rapid director revisions.
  • Weekly Between-Session Assignment: Take a 15-minute raw multi-camera panel interview with unorganised audio. Sync it, build a multi-cam sequence, and produce a tight 2-minute narrative cut.
  • Capstone Milestone: Complete the multi-cam sync and dialogue cut for the capstone’s interview and A-roll narrative tracks.

Day 3:Dynamic Trimming, High-Velocity Pacing & Broadcast Audio Post-Production

Core Theme: Precision frame-accurate cutting paired with studio-grade audio repair, dynamic ducking, and loudness compliance.

  • Market Trend: High-end commercial ads rely on invisible dynamic trimming and polished, broadcast-compliant audio mixes delivered directly from the NLE timeline.
  • Advanced Technical Concepts & Tools: Dynamic Trimming (Ripple, Rolling, Slip, Slide, J-K-L shuttle trimming, Extend Edit); Essential Sound panel (dialogue/music/SFX tagging); Speech Enhancement; dynamic auto-ducking; parametric EQ; multiband compression; Spectral Repair via Adobe Audition integration; EBU R128 / ITU-R BS.1770-4 loudness normalisation.
  • In-Class Practical Exercise: Perform dynamic precision trimming on a high-speed action sequence using keyboard-only J-K-L/Slip-Slide workflows. Isolate degraded dialogue in Audition, remove background noise with Spectral Repair, and mix to a strict -24 LKFS broadcast standard.
  • Weekly Between-Session Assignment: Edit a 60-second high-energy promo. Clean up clipped voiceover audio, layer sound effects (foley, risers, hits), and mix to both web (-14 LUFS) and TV (-24 LKFS) targets.
  • Capstone Milestone: Execute the dynamic trim edit and produce the preliminary master dialogue and sound-design track for the capstone project.

Day 4: Motion Graphics Integration, Dynamic Link & Custom MOGRT Automation

Core Theme: Seamlessly bridging Premiere Pro and After Effects for advanced visual effects, lower thirds, tracking, and reusable motion graphics templates.

  • Market Trend: Commercial clients demand custom motion graphics and dynamic speed ramps without time-consuming intermediate renders.
  • Advanced Technical Concepts & Tools: Adobe Dynamic Link (round-tripping without rendering); Essential Graphics panel; custom MOGRT authoring; Mocha AE planar tracking for screen replacement & masking; animated lower thirds & kinetic typography; time remapping and speed ramps with Optical Flow.
  • In-Class Practical Exercise: Track a moving phone screen in a commercial scene using Dynamic Link and Mocha AE, replace the display content, apply speed ramping with Optical Flow interpolation, and deploy animated, brand-compliant lower thirds via MOGRTs.
  • Weekly Between-Session Assignment: Create a 30-second product teaser requiring 3 dynamic speed ramps, 2 screen replacements via Dynamic Link, and a custom lower-third system built in After Effects and imported as a MOGRT.
  • Capstone Milestone: Build and integrate all lower thirds, motion graphic titles, callouts, and VFX fixes for the capstone campaign.

Day 5: Advanced ACES/Lumetri Colour Management, Scopes & Commercial Grading

Core Theme: Colour pipeline architecture, log balancing, matching disparate camera sensors, and look creation using advanced Lumetri tools.

  • Market Trend: Commercial spots are filmed on multiple camera systems; editors must balance mixed camera profiles and deliver calibrated Rec.709 or HDR masters.
  • Advanced Technical Concepts & Tools: Premiere Pro colour management (colour spaces, working spaces, HDR/SDR setup); Lumetri Scopes (Vectorscope, Waveform, RGB Parade); primary correction (exposure, contrast, WB curves); HSL Secondary curves; shot-matching; creative LUT management & custom .cube exports; ACEScg workflow overview.
  • In-Class Practical Exercise: Balance and match shots from three different camera sensors (RED, Sony, Canon) in a single scene. Isolate skin tones using HSL Secondary selection, correct off-axis hues, and build a commercial grade using Lumetri curves.
  • Weekly Between-Session Assignment: Grade a 5-shot sequence with extreme exposure variation and mixed lighting. Match all shots to a single hero reference image and export a custom 3D LUT (.cube).
  • Capstone Milestone: Complete the final colour grade and shot-matching pass across all hero cuts of the capstone project.

Day 6: Multi-Format Studio Handoffs, Frame.io Review Pipelines & Master Exports

Core Theme: Studio-grade archiving, collaborative review pipelines, batch exporting across formats, and post-production handoff — plus the client-facing pitch.

  • Market Trend: Agencies win repeat business by delivering error-free master packages, social variants, and clean audio/XML stems on short turnaround, and by presenting the work with agency-grade confidence.
  • Advanced Technical Concepts & Tools: Frame.io review & collaboration (marker sync, version comparison, timecode-accurate comments); Adobe Media Encoder batch rendering; social aspect-ratio adaptation (Auto Reframe, 16:9 → 9:16 / 1:1); Project Manager archiving (consolidate & transcode); EDL/XML/AAF exports for studio handoffs.
  • In-Class Practical Exercise: Set up a live Frame.io review link for client sign-off. Adapt a 16:9 master into 9:16 and 1:1 using Auto Reframe with keyframe adjustments, then run a consolidated project archive and export AAF stems for the final studio mix.
  • Weekly Between-Session Assignment: Finalise all capstone deliverables, run Media Encoder batch presets for master and social variants, compile an XML/AAF handoff package, and submit the pitch presentation link via Discord.
  • Capstone Milestone: Live capstone pitch presentation and studio talent-pool evaluation.
