Master the Art and Engineering of Vector Design
Modern brand and product work no longer rewards designers who can simply “draw well” in Illustrator — it rewards designers who can build systems: scalable identity kits, procedural pattern libraries, dynamic symbol sets, and export pipelines that a whole studio can plug into without breaking. This intensive 6-week curriculum is built to close that exact gap.
By pairing advanced construction techniques — appearance stacking, non-destructive pathfinding, variable type, procedural pattern generation — with real studio production discipline, you’ll build the technical muscle to take on high-end commercial briefs with speed, consistency, and confidence.
The 6-Day Advanced Curriculum
Day 1: Complex Brand Identity Systems (The Multi-App Identity Engine)
Core Theme: Building identity systems that scale cleanly across every touchpoint, not just a single logo file.
- Market Trend: Clients increasingly commission full brand systems — logo lockups, colour architecture, and pattern language — rather than a single static logo.
- Advanced Technical Concepts & Tools: Global Swatches & Colour Groups; Appearance Panel stacking for multi-fill/multi-stroke logo construction; Graphic Styles for reusable brand treatments; artboard architecture for multi-application delivery (favicon → billboard).
- In-Class Practical Exercise: Construct a full logo lockup system (primary, secondary, icon-only, monochrome) using a single master Appearance stack so all variants update from one edit.
- Weekly Between-Session Assignment: Build a 3-colour-group palette system (primary, secondary, functional/neutral) with documented usage rules, applied across 5 mock brand touchpoints.
- Capstone Milestone: Establishes the core identity kit (logo lockups + colour architecture) that anchors the entire capstone brand.
Day 2: Non-Destructive Vector Construction (Pathfinder vs. Shape Builder Mastery)
Core Theme: Building complex vector illustrations and icon sets without ever “committing” too early.
- Market Trend: Studios need icon and asset libraries that can be edited fast under client revision pressure — destructive path-merging kills turnaround time.
- Advanced Technical Concepts & Tools: Pathfinder vs. Shape Builder decision-making (when to use which and why); Compound Shapes vs. Compound Paths; Draw Inside/Draw Behind modes; Clipping Masks vs. Opacity Masks for non-destructive layering; Pixel Grid Alignment & Pixel Preview for crisp, sub-pixel-precise UI glyphs; Live Paint Groups for hollow/multi-region icon fills.
- In-Class Practical Exercise: Build a 12-icon set for a product UI on a strict 24px grid using only non-destructive construction — every icon must remain fully editable and pixel-snapped at the end of the session.
- Weekly Between-Session Assignment: Expand the icon set to 24 icons across 2 weight variants (regular/bold) using shared base geometry, then convert 6 of them into a simple custom Graph Tool marker set for basic data-driven iconography.
- Capstone Milestone: Produces the icon/pictogram library used across the brand’s digital and print touchpoints.
Day 3: Dynamic Symbols, Variable Type & Scalable Asset Systems
Core Theme: Designing components once, deploying them everywhere — the studio “build once, reuse forever” mindset.
- Market Trend: Fast-turnaround social and campaign work demands variable type systems and symbol libraries that update globally in seconds.
- Advanced Technical Concepts & Tools: Dynamic Symbols and nested symbol instances; Variable Fonts in Illustrator (axes, custom named instances); Data-driven text swapping via Variables panel; Linked vs. Embedded assets for team handoff.
- In-Class Practical Exercise: Build a modular social media template system using nested symbols and a variable type axis, so a single master edit cascades across 6 campaign variants.
- Weekly Between-Session Assignment: Produce a 5-piece campaign roll-out (social, story, banner, print flyer, email header) from the same symbol/variable system.
- Capstone Milestone: Establishes the templated campaign/marketing asset system for the capstone brand.
Day 4: Procedural Pattern Design & 3D/Isometric Styling
Core Theme: Generative pattern systems and dimensional vector illustration for premium packaging and editorial work.
- Market Trend: Procedural, generative-feeling patterns and isometric/3D vector illustration are dominating premium packaging, editorial, and tech-brand visual identity.
- Advanced Technical Concepts & Tools: Pattern Options panel (tile types, brick offset, overlap rules) for seamless procedural patterns; Blend Tool for gradient-driven procedural texture; 3D and Materials effect (extrude, revolve, isometric projection) with custom graphic mapping; Repeat (Radial, Grid, Mirror) for rapid iteration.
- In-Class Practical Exercise: Build a seamless procedural brand pattern and a matching isometric hero illustration using the same asset vocabulary.
- Weekly Between-Session Assignment: Extend the pattern into 3 colourway variants and apply it to a mocked packaging or merchandise surface.
- Capstone Milestone: Delivers the pattern library and signature illustration style used across packaging and hero assets.
Day 5: Production Pipelines & Automated Asset Export
Core Theme: Studio-grade file handoff, batch production, and export automation at scale.
- Market Trend: Agencies win retainers by proving they can deliver dozens of correctly-formatted assets on tight deadlines without manual errors.
- Advanced Technical Concepts & Tools: Asset Export panel (batch export presets, naming conventions, scale sets for web/print/social); Actions & Scripting basics for repetitive task automation; Data Merge for variable-data collateral (business cards, name badges, personalised campaign assets); file cleanup and layer/artboard naming conventions for team handoff; print-production rigor — Overprint Preview, Pantone (PMS) spot-colour separations, trap settings, bleed/slug configuration, and PDF/X-4 export compliance for agency-grade print handoff.
- In-Class Practical Exercise: Batch-export a full asset set (icons, logos, social templates) into a correctly organised, studio-ready delivery folder using export presets, then run a full pre-flight pass on one print asset (spot colour, bleed, trap) to PDF/X-4 spec.
- Weekly Between-Session Assignment: Run a Data Merge exercise producing 10 personalised variants of a single campaign template, plus a pre-flighted, print-ready PDF/X-4 export of one capstone asset.
- Capstone Milestone: Establishes the final export/delivery pipeline the capstone project will be packaged through.
Day 6: Portfolio Assembly, Client Pitch & Studio-Grade Presentation
Core Theme: Packaging the full system as a client-ready deliverable and pitching it with confidence.
- Market Trend: Winning and retaining premium clients depends as much on presentation and pitch clarity as on the design work itself.
- Advanced Technical Concepts & Tools: Building a client-facing style guide/brand book layout in Illustrator; mockup composition and presentation staging; version control and file archiving conventions for ongoing client accounts; structuring a design rationale for pitch delivery.
- In-Class Practical Exercise: Assemble the capstone deliverables into a presentation-ready style guide and mockup set.
- Weekly Between-Session Assignment: Finalise and rehearse the capstone pitch.
