In-Short 2017 Film Festival

IN-SHORT FILM FESTIVAL

In-short Film Festival is one of the festivals held in Nigeria to promote short films. A lot of people are unaware of the fact that there are lots of short film makers in the country because most of them are still up and coming. Many cannot afford to produce feature-length films. Starting with a short film is fine, although some films makers think it is a bad idea.

A short film is any motion picture not long enough to be considered a feature film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defines a short film as “an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits”.

“Short films are often screened at local, national, or international film festivals and made by independent filmmakers for non profit, either with a low budget or no budget at all. They are usually funded by film grants, non profit organizations, sponsor, or personal funds. Short films are generally used by filmmakers to gain experience or prove their talent in order to gain funding for future films from private investors, entertainment companies, or film studios.

The In-short is an annual film festival that has been on for the past 7 years. The last edition held from the 14th– 16th of December 2017 at the luxurious Sheraton Lagos Hotel, Ikeja. There were over 3000 entries for screening from over 120 countries, and awards were given to the winners – a great way to promote short film production and encourage film makers.

Orange VFX, as a partner with the organizer of the film festival, was present. A free training session on 3D animation was held at the festival on the first day, leaving the audience with a great impression about 3D animation.

Is it necessary for film Directors to have a knowledge of 3D animation?

Not necessarily. Although most special effects work is completed during post-production, it must be carefully planned and choreographed in pre-production and production. A visual effects supervisor is usually involved with the production from an early stage to work closely with the Director and all related personnel to achieve the desired effects.

Although there are softwares that produce decent results, most times we employ voice-over artists. Voice-over is used to give voices and personalities to animated characters.

Since Orange VFX is a very big studio, why can’t they produce any full length movie that will tell the Nigerian story?

The major constraint in Nigeria’s animation industry is money and time. The funds required are quite huge.

The cost is estimated within the range of N20m to N200m.

There are other great softwares too. There is Autodesk 3DS Max, Cinema 4D, Blender and more.

What is the difference between CGI, animes and Cartoons?

Computer-generated imagery (CGI) is the application of computer graphics to create or contribute to images in art, printed media, video games, films, television programs, shorts, commercials, videos, and simulators. The visual scenes may be dynamic or static and may be two-dimensional (2D), though the term “CGI” is most commonly used to refer to 3D computer graphics used for creating scenes or special effects in films and television. anime is used to refer specifically to animation from Japan or as a Japanese-disseminated animation style often characterized by colorful graphics, vibrant characters and fantastical themes. A cartoon is a type of two-dimensional illustration, possibly animated. While the specific definition has changed over time, modern usage refers to (a) a typically non-realistic or semi-realistic artistic style of drawing or painting, (b) an image or series of images intended for satire, caricature, or humor, or (c) a motion picture that relies on a sequence of illustrations for its animation.
